Compassionate, dedicated volunteers are the life force of SAS, being a volunteer has many benefits for both you and the animal. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and our animals. There are a number of ways you can use your skills and talents in all areas of our shelter.

Like most shelters, the success of Safe Animal Shelter would be impossible without the volunteers that support our animals as well as our staff.
- You don’t need special skills, just a few hours on a regular basis and a passion for the welfare for dogs and cats in Clay County.
- There are many volunteer opportunities, you can choose to participate, you can focus on one activity or several.
- There is something to do for almost everyone!
- Commit to a minimum of 6 hour per month for at least 6 months.
- You must be 16 years old and over.
- You must be 18 or over to handle the dogs.
- Attend our mandatory orientation prior to volunteering.
- During volunteering time, you are a representative of the shelter! Please wear long pants or long shorts and a SAS t-shirt. Closed toes shoes are a must.
SAS supports Florida’s Bright Future program by offering opportunities to satisfy your required volunteer hours.
- You must be 16 years old and over.
- You must be 18 or over to handle the dogs.
- Must provide proof of eligibility from your school.
- Must attend our mandatory orientation prior to volunteering.
- During volunteering time, you are a representative of the shelter! Please wear long pants or long shorts and a SAS t-shirt. Closed toes shoes are a must.
If your 7th grader is looking for a volunteer opportunity for a Civics project Safe Animal Shelter can help!
- Students must be accompanied by parent
- Volunteer hours will be limited to 1.5 hours at a time.
- Space is limited to 3 students at any given time.
- Must attend our mandatory orientation prior to volunteering.
- During volunteering time, you are a representative of the shelter! Please wear long pants or long shorts and a SAS t-shirt. Closed toes shoes are a must.
We offer opportunities for you to fulfill your court ordered community service requirements.
- A copy of your Court Order is required before you start. Timesheet must be presented each day you come and signed by a supervisor.
- You must be 16 years old and over.
- You must be 18 or over to handle the dogs.

Cat Tales is our summer reading program for young readers to improve their reading skills by reading to our kitties. The Program will help children improve their reading skills while also helping the shelter animals with socialization and human interaction.
- Program hours are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
- Children are welcome to read to our cats during the summer months.
- All children must always be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times.
